Sugar and all that jazz

Our holidays have been pretty normal, full of family, food, and sugar. I think I'm officially sugared-out (and this coming from the girl who always has room for Chewy Sprees and homemade cookies).

Samuel got a camera but has spent more time with his Lightning McQueen bubble bath.

Yep, it's bubble bath inside a car, the best of both worlds according to my son.

Lillian also loved her gifts, but more than anything she has loved having everyone home, playing and getting attention.

Carlin bought me a library. Okay, it's actually a Kindle, but with all the books available at my fingertips and the fact that I can download books from my library instead of putting myself on waiting lists, it's as good as a library if not better.

With all the hustle and bustle of the past few months, I've been reflecting on where the time goes. With this thought I stumbled upon a video via MormonMessages. It was something I needed to hear and I've decided to make it my motto for the New Year.

So, if you find that I am blogging less just know that it's because I've decided to cherish the time with my children while they still think Mommy is invincible and consider me their best friend. Or to be with my husband, visit with a friend, or something of that nature, because "moments are the molecules that make up eternity" (Neal A. Maxwell).

Happy New Year everyone.

Christmas Cookies

This morning I had a vision. It was of the kids and I in the kitchen happily making cookies and listening to Christmas music. The kids listened to everything I said, we laughed and ate cookie dough and everything was perfect.

Then reality hit. You would think with a three year old and a two year old I would be past my delusional day-dreaming...

The success of the cookie-making project depends on who you ask. I burned a batch of sugar cookies, my no-bake cookies refuse to set, issued time-out several times, half of the cookies have bite marks on them and the other half of holes the size of little fingers, my kitchen is a mess the size of Texas and the table has been dyed red and green.

I think I could safely say it was a failure.

But according to Samuel and Lillian's frosting covered faces and hands, their inability to keep their hands off the cookies, and their self-satisfying giggles, it was a huge success. Besides, I think there is some unspoken rule among toddlers that the size of the mess is directly related to the amount of fun had.

If this is so, then we had a blast.

I Am a Child of God

The kids watched this video three times yesterday. They just loved it.

I loved it too. I felt a quiet peace come upon our household and for a few short minutes I saw my children sit quietly and reverently.

It's not about Christmas exactly, but what I felt was the Spirit of Christ and isn't that what we are truly seeking this time of year?

December 7, 2011

Note to self:

One should not make cookies when hungry.

Especially when one is addicted to cookie dough.

I blame it on my brother and his Christmas package. Thanks a lot Dallin!

So Much Beauty

There are days when I just don't feel like doing it anymore. There are days when spilled Mac & Cheese is just too much, when my frustration turns into tears, when I get tired of hearing the word "no" and when I want to be selfish and pretend no one else exists.

Maybe that's why I needed Macy Gray's "Beauty in the World" stuck in my head today.

"When you don't know what to do
Don't know if you'll make it through,
Remember that He's given you, beauty in the world

'Cause there is beauty in the world
So much beauty in the world
Always beauty in the world
There is beauty in the world."

My moments of Beauty:
Samuel giving me hugs.
Lillian's giggles and beautiful smile.
Laughing over a game of Yahtzee with Carlin.
Finding our camera we thought we lost at the zoo.
Reading books with my kids and feeling their love and joy.

When I think of all I've been given, I realize all the beauty in my life and suddenly spilled Mac & Cheese is just another part of that beauty.

Because the video makes me happy:

Oklahoma...

Oklahoma is many things.

It's tornadoes, 62 days of 100 degree heat, blizzards, ice storms, fires, flooding, bugs galore, droughts, hailstorms, and thunderstorms that can put the fear of God in ya.

What is it not?

Earthquakes.

So, why in the world have we had three earthquakes in about as many days? (Say what you will about pre-schocks and after-shocks, the fact is the earth moved my house and that's not normal people, at least not out here).

And may I mention the same night we had an after-shock of 4.7, we also had extreme weather which caused tornadoes and flooding.

Needless to say, the crazy year here in Oklahoma has left me pondering my eternal salvation...

Happy Halloween

My kids went as minions from Despicable Me - because they are minions.

Now all I need is a freeze-ray.

Catch Phrase

I have a little-blond-headed sound recording that follows me around all day absorbing the things I say and then repeating them back to his sister, friends, and stuffed animals.

I have come to realize a few things about myself, like how I say "oh my goodness" drawing the "oo" out and inflecting my voice up at the end, how many times I send my kids to time-out, and how I often yell "What?!"

But what I really can't figure out is where he has picked-up his newest phrase.

Me: "Samuel, you want to eat dinner?"
Samuel: "Why not?"

Me: "Samuel, let's clean up your toys."
Samuel: "Okay, why not?"

Me: "Hey, should we bake some cookies?"
Samuel: "Why not?"

He also uses it when he wants to suggest something. "Mommy, why not take a bath?" "Mommy, why not play trains?"

So I close this ramble with one simple question - Why not?

Time Goes By so Slowly...

Unless you have kids, then kids move slowly and time speeds up.

For example, getting in and out of the car.

Every day we get in the car my children insist they do it themselves. If I try to help I get a very stern "NO!" from Lillian and a "Samuel do it!" from my son. If I try to override their vetoes and help them anyway it usually ends in a complete meltdown in which I have to let them back out of the car so we can start all over.

It doesn't help that their arms are full of toys that must come along on the ride.

I know what you are thinking, "Aubrey, just let them do it, they are exploring their independence and it's healthy for them."

Well, it might be healthy for them, but it's driving me crazy. I only have so much patience and it is usually used up just trying to get them dressed and out the front door in the first place.

And that's just getting in the car, I won't mention the getting out-of-the-car and all the distractions that come with it.

Long Week

Lillian got sick last weekend. Followed by Carlin. Followed by Samuel. Followed by Lillian again. Followed by Samuel again.

It seems like I've spent every morning this week cleaning up things that shall remain nameless (I'll let you use your imagination).

This sickness always seems to hit early morning and I wake up to find a mess. For Lillian, who is confined to a crib, it is a matter of stripping the bed down. For Samuel, it's a bit more complicated.

We've reached the end of the week, but if I were to measure this weekend by this morning's find - well, it's going to be a long weekend too.

However, through all this I have found a few things I'm grateful for, including:

Spot Shot

I bought this on a whim at Sam's Club and it has proven to be the best whim-buy EVER. Since I don't have a steam-cleaner, this is the next best thing.

Clorox Disinfecting Wipes

Great for everything from wiping down mattresses to cleaning toys.

Showers

Some messes are just too big for a box of wipes...

And last, but not least. My wash-machine.

I have never been more grateful to have a wash-machine of my own and not have to make daily visits to a laundry-mat.

I would like to say...

I would like to say that my lack of posting comes because I spend too much time playing with my kids... but I would be lying. It comes because of the uber-busy schedules we've been keeping lately. And the skipping naps things, really not liking that very much.

I would like to say that I have pictures to post... but I can't find my camera and even if I did I haven't been a good picture-taker lately.

I would like to say that I continue to keep myself in shape and my stomach is a flat-muscular specimen of awesomeness... but the long days and stressful schedule keeps driving me to Oreos and peanut butter.

I would like to say that my exhaustion and weird cravings come from being pregnant... but - Oh wait, I actually would NOT like to say that at all. And I'm not, for those who were wondering...

A Morning in My Life

8:00am - Up and at 'em this morning. I did get to sleep in a bit due to the cloudy, cold weather. Now, I'm showered, dressed, and getting the kids breakfast.

8:30am - Decide maybe I should eat something since breakfast is the most important part of the day.

8:40am - Sitting down to a nice breakfast of English muffins and eggs.

8:42am - Lillian joins me and blows on my hot eggs for me.

8:43am - Lillian seems to think that blowing on my breakfast has entitled her to help me eat my breakfast.

8:44am - Samuel has joined us and insists that he has toast as well. I get up to make them breakfast and remember at the last minute to grab my plate and juice, just as Samuel and Lillian are slowly making movements to snatch my food.

8:50am - have made toast for kids.

8:55am - get on Facebook to talk to my brother, kids decide to join me with sticky fingers and all. Samuel insists that I wash his thumb (yep, just his thumb).

9:05am - kids playing happily with toys in living room. I intentionally ignore the cereal, toys, and who-knows-what else that is undoubtedly spread throughout the house by now.

9:20am - Samuel wants to play outside. I tell him it's cold and he needs to get dressed first. He doesn't seem to understand why he can't wear his pajamas outside.

9:30am - I try to get both kids dressed. Samuel ends up wearing his winter coat and sandals.

9:32am - Lillian is walking around with a shirt on her head calling it a hat.

9:35am - Note to self: I really need to get fall/winter clothes for the kids. And Samuel has outgrown his pants.

9:36am - So has Lillian apparently (outgrown her pants).

9:40am - kids are dressed - YES! Samuel discovers it is raining.

9:41am - try to convince kids they really do not want to play outside in the rain.

9:42am - I hear a mysterious ticking noise coming from the computer.
9:42.15am - I lift speakers up to my ear and figure the noise is coming from them, that's when I discover the plastic burning smell.
9:42.20am - Desperately trying to figure out which cords to unplug all while murmuring "I told Carlin there was something wrong with the speakers."
9:42.45am - Finally have the speakers unplugged. Kids have decided to go outside without me.
9:44am - Lillian is wearing her cute pink polka-dotted raincoat Grandma H. bought her. Too bad I can't find my camera (I have a sinking feeling it may have been lost at the zoo...)

9:46am - Start on this post.

9:55am - Screaming and crying comes from the backyard. Open the door to find my kids wet and muddy.

9:57am - the kids have shoved their way into the kitchen and are now tracking mud throughout the house. I hysterically yell at them to remove their shoes.

10:00am - there is now mud from the kitchen to the bathroom. Apparently the mud had seeped through their shoes and onto their feet, removing the shoes was inconsequential.

10:10am - floors are clean. Kids are clean and dry (but not dressed, you can't have it ALL, you know).

10:12am - this is me signing out for the morning. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Fall is in the AIR...

And I'm giddy. Finally a break from our triple-digit heat. (We are talking about 61 days of 100 or more this summer).

I have the sudden urge to cook dinner, decorate my house, and maybe even (gasp) get crafty.

I've had every intention of updating everyone with details of the wedding of my BIL (mentioned in previous post) which consumed most of our lives in August. I also wanted to mention other things like football (Go Pokes!), cute things the kids do (like Lillian singing "Twinkle, twinkle little star), and other random happenings.

But what I want to do most is sit outside and bask in this beautiful, perfect weather we are currently experiencing. Now all we need is rain (and now that I look outside that wish might be coming true sooner than I think...).

Instead, here are the family pics we took back in March (yep, finally found the CD, yay). Lillian pretty much looks the same, just taller and starting to thin out a bit.

That should y'all over for a bit.

Introducing...

The newest member of the Walser clan...

Isn't she lovely? The best part of it - she's like my long lost sister and we get along great. Oh and they moved barely ten minutes away. Yay for having family as your best friends!

Favorite

Not only is this my perhaps my favorite commercial of all time, but there are days I feel like yelling this at my kids (or something similar to it).

"Hey you dang woodchucks, quite chuckin' my wood!"

Every Intention

I have many intentions when I start my day. Mondays are usually chore days. Laundry, dishes, cleaning, bills... you get the point.

With my laundry going and my dishes in the dishwasher, I thought I would take some time to update my blog with our family pictures.

Mind you, they are the family pictures we took back in March, but better late than never. The only problem? I can't find the CD with all of our pictures.

It seems like that's my life lately. I have every intention to do XYZ and then things go awry. You will also be amused to find out that I (umm, or my Dad) finally hung up picture frames on the wall with the pictures of models the frames originally came with. Since I can't find my CD of family pictures, it looks like the strangers will be on my wall for a bit a longer.

I've decided to tell everyone that's Carlin and I in our younger, skinnier days.

Why My Kids Might Not Make It Till Their Next Birthdays...

Remeber how I made a goal this year to be more positive? Well, I'm trying. I'm trying really hard. And in some ways I can see the humor in the situation... sort of.

My day started out great. We bought a new car over the weekend and I got to sleep-in this morning because Carlin could take himself to work and still leave me with a car. Woohoo.

Then I found cantaloupe growing in my yard this morning while weeding and I thought yay!

I started putting together a food storage plan, took the kids to the splash pad, and got both of them down for naps at the same time. (First time this week!)

I could probably find more humor in it if I haven't been trying to get the house clean for the past week. It just seems I can never get the toys picked up, the stickiness off the floors, the food off the walls, and myself showered all at the same time. I spend all day trying to get the house to a low-level roar (I've abandoned all hope of having a spic-and-span clean house, I'm just hoping for a non-embarassing clean house) only to have the forces of nature (aka my kids) work against me.

I'll stop complaining and let the pictures do the talking. Remember this was done AFTER I had sorted, picked-up, and cleaned most of the house.

The cake incident was done during a short absence on my part in which Samuel got a hold of a cake I had bought for Relief Society (thank goodness that meeting was last night and this was the leftovers, although I feel inclined to mention that while leaving the store yesterday Samuel took the opportunity to throw the cake out of the cart and onto the floor. I still served it) - okay back to the story, Samuel put the cake on the table and when I walked back into the dining room both kids were up to their elbows in cake.

My Children

As my children throw toys across the house I've decided to ignore them and post embarrassing pictures instead.

First, we had a dance party the other day and of course had to dress in princess dresses:

Lillian gets very excited over Nutella...

I dropped Lillian off at my friend Laura's place, when I picked her up she had pigtails and toenail polish. If only I could hire Laura to come do my daughter's hair everyday.

I guess not all of these pictures were terribly embarrassing, but in my effort to ignore my kids they stopped throwing toys and started throwing blankets and pillows and have now resorted to chasing each other around the couch. I suppose that means my ignoring worked as they are now entertaining each other.

June 20, 2011

Dear Dad,

Dad, when I was a kid you were always perfect to me. You worked hard, played with us kids, had a beautiful singing voice, were strong and patient, always knew how to make Mom laugh, always had a hug ready, and always knew the right things to say. I used to lay in bed on Saturday mornings and listen to you literally whistle while you worked. I loved the way you treated Mom and always told myself I would marry someone who treated me the same way.

You've always been supportive of me and my decisions. I still remember the day I came home from school in the middle of my 9th grade year and announced I wanted to join the swim team. The next day you took me to the pool and met with the high school swim coach. I will never forget my first 500 yard race. I swam my little heart out and when I completed the race I was too weak and exhausted to lift myself out of the pool. Suddenly your hand was there lifting me up into a huge hug, even though I was sopping wet. I had come in dead last, but you hadn't cared.

To be honest, you still are a bit perfect to me. I still love to hear you sing or whistle. You are the one I call when I have a difficult decision and I need someone to discuss it with. I have never wanted anything more than to make you proud. I hope I have in some ways. Because of you I am a mother and wife. If it hadn't been for your gentle prodding to always follow the Lord, your example of prayer and diligence, I don't know if I would have been open to the idea of marriage when Carlin came along. Now I have two kids and you are a grandpa. You are a great Grandpa and I hope my kids will get to know the strong, quiet man whom their mother loves.

I love you Dad.

Entirely Too Excited...

Look at my son!

You: "Yep, looks like a normal picture to me Aubrey..."

Me: "Well it's not, it's Samuel wearing shoes!"

You: "And...?"

Me: "...And... he put them on all by himself! Woohooo and Happy Dance!"

Yep, I might be entirely too excited, but isn't that what motherhood is all about?

June 13, 2011

Excuses...

For not blogging...

1. Samuel's diarrhea diaper - I will leave it at that.
2. A new calling in church which is probably the most time demanding calling I've had in a while, if not ever.
3. My sister visiting for a week, we were having too much fun to take time out to blog.
4. The gym - I've been working-out like a crazy person (or at least trying to, just need to get myself up in the mornings).
5. Keeping my kids busy with summer activities.
6. Cleaning.
7. Organizing, I am bound and determined to get my house to a manageable level by the end of the year.
8. And exhaustion. Blog or take a nap? Naps have been winning hands down.

Counting My Blessings

May 24 Blessings
1. This little beauty came within 10 miles of our house before turning north and dissipating:

Considering it had already traveled 20 miles in an easterly course before turning and was an EF4 (that's pretty destructive, the highest being an EF5), we were feeling pretty blessed.
2. Another tornado also threatened south of us, heading toward all of my campus friends, once again it dissipated before reaching Norman.
3. A tornado came within a mile of my parent's home, they're safe.
4. Another tornado hit a couple of friends-of-the-family's houses, all survived, and amazingly enough my best friend's house made it out with barely a scratch (can't say the same for my other friend, whose roof was completely lifted and then thrown back into the house).
5. The most destructive tornado came within a few miles of my in-laws house. Their property came out of it without a scratch. Their friend's property was completely destroyed, but they amazingly survived.

It was an extremely emotionally-exhaustive day for me, but I rejoiced at finding everyone safe and sound and listening to all of the survivor stories on the news. Enough can not be said about the weathermen in this state who literally saved the lives of hundreds.

May 25, 2011
6. My beautiful baby boy turned 3.

(I keep telling him to quit growing up, but he doesn't listen). We had a train cake:

7. At the "train" park (the park is built next to the railroad tracks) and the train actually came through while we were there for his party!
8. Miss Lily-pad helped with the cake and her smile just lights up my whole world:

May 27, 2011
9. Carlin and I celebrated 5 years of marriage. He bought me a gorgeous necklace and I planned a surprise getaway to Dallas, where we spent three days doing nothing, sleeping-in, and eating. (We also went to a Dallas Symphony Orchestra concert which was AMAZING!).

10. My last blessing (at least for this post): My family. Living close enough that I was able to drop the kids off at the grandparent's to make my weekend happen and having them be a part of my kids lives and birthday parties. And my wonderful husband and gorgeous kids who sing at the top of their lungs and make me laugh every day.

Holiness in Motherhood

I went to Time Out for Women (a conference specifically geared toward LDS women) this past weekend. It was wonderful. I enjoyed the presentations, felt uplifted, and enjoyed a much needed time away from the kids.

Three of the most influential women in my life. SIL-Samantha, Mom, and MIL-Val

One presentation specifically was about finding holiness in motherhood. It seemed an oxymoron, but I enjoyed the presentation. However, when recapping the conference to Carlin I sort of skipped an explanation on that particular topic, it just didn't stick out to me at the time.

Mondays are always my hard days. I have loads of laundry, the kitchen is always a disaster zone, and today has been particularly bad with me fighting off yet another pink-eye infection. You can imagine why I was close to tears when I came out of the laundry room to find this scene:

After a talk about how it made mommy sad and what could we do to make mommy happy, the kids and I started cleaning. Suddenly the thought "holiness in motherhood" entered my mind. How was I supposed to find holiness in a situation such as this?

Reflecting back on the conference I again looked at my children and saw that they were happily cleaning with their wash cloths. Suddenly a quiet peace fell upon me and in that small moment I found holiness. I can't really describe it much better than that, so just take my word on it.

The Crime

Samuel decided to redecorate the house today.

With red crayon.

Walls. Floors. We keep finding it all over the house.

The red crayon is missing.

It seems he had an accomplice.

Judging by the red flakes coming out of Lillian's mouth, I am assuming she destroyed all evidence.

The suspects gave no comment.

P.S. Don't ask why they are wearing Christmas and Halloween pj's... I mean really, it was the least of my worries at the time.

A Beautiful Thing

I got this little beauty for my birthday (which was over a month ago...):

Carlin and I have been stuffing our mouths since. I've made white bread, cinnamon swirl bread, sour cream coffee cake, banana bread, and just last night Carlin used it for cinnamon rolls. Yummm. It is so much fun and I can't wait to try out more complicated recipes like French Baguettes.

Of course, this isn't really helping with my goal to get us back on our diet, but I think we will live.

Flight

Take these wings
and let them soar.
And with you,
love evermore.
Dreams and hopes
of yesterday,
Are once again
here to stay
Into the valley
of death to roam
Into His arms
find your way home.

Good-bye my dear friend,
I will always believe.

And now for Dessert...

I went to the bathroom. When I came out I found this:

That's chocolate pudding folks...

While writing this post:

Not sure if this makes me or the kids look bad.
